Charge (Rich Oddie remix)

by Ctrls

/
  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

The new Ctrls record is a peak time affair, powered by a rhythm that is lean and functional. 'Charge' has a pacey funk bass line in the foreground, but whirring and clicking away in the left field are shards of glitchy percussion and unexpected stops and starts. The B-side has the innovating minds of Rrose & Rich Oddie (one half of Orphx) providing powerful workouts both for the 'heads' and for the floor. - Token

about

Take a step back and assess the output from Token over recent times and you get the impression label boss Kr!z is fixing for them to become Belgium's answer to Ostgut Ton. Already this year, Token have debuted the Eschaton collaboration between Ancient Methods and Orphx, and had Rodhad and Robert Hood remix O [Phase] with an Inigo Kennedy LP on the way too. Here, Token call on Rrose and Rich Oddie to add some remix heat to the second CTRLS release of 2014, with stunning results! "Charge" finds Troels B. Knudsen in particularly nightmarish form with a production that's dominated by the searing tonal riff, whilst Rrose's remix reinforces his reputation for nihilistic big room techno. Orphx's Oddie reduces his version, focusing on self-modulating rhythms, caustic atmospherics and squealing effects. - Juno

Approach "Charge" with caution. It's brutal and abrasive, and clearly only suitable for dance floors that are already moving well. A less-than-pleasant stab is its defining feature, sure to confuse and entrance a room in equal measure. On the flip sit remixes from Rrose and Rich Oddie. The former's is a heavy and fast, featuring the same snake-charming metallic synths that appear in most of his work. Oddie's is more subdued. Atmospheric and swung, it's a stirring effort from the Orphx member, and it should come in handy for techno jocks looking to add some funk to their early slots. - Resident Advisor
